What is a VHS audio effect?
It's a chain of processing that mimics the sound of analog tape formats like VHS, cassette and reel-to-reel β tape saturation, wow & flutter, hiss, tone coloration and gentle volume drift.
Is this tool really free?
Yes β 100% free, no signup, no watermark, no usage limits. Apply tape vibes to as many tracks as you like.
Do my files get uploaded?
No. All processing (waveshaper, filters, LFO-modulated delay, noise, EQ) runs locally in your browser via the Web Audio API.
What audio formats are supported?
Any format your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, M4A and WEBM.
Can I record directly from my microphone?
Yes. Switch to the 'Record Audio' tab, grant mic permission, record a take and it will load straight into the processing chain.
What does each slider do?
Noise = amount of hiss; Tape Character = saturation + high-roll-off; Wobble & Flutter = wow/flutter pitch modulation depth; Stereo Motion = slow auto-panner width; Imperfections = 60 Hz hum + slow volume drift; Tone = darker-to-brighter tilt EQ.
What's the difference between White, Pink and Brown Noise?
White noise has equal energy per frequency (bright, VHS-like air). Pink noise is balanced like music (classic cassette hiss). Brown noise is dark and rumbly (worn-out heavily-used tape).
Which preset should I start with?
Try 'Warm Retro' for subtle analog vibe, 'Wobbly VHS' for 80s home-video energy, 'Dirty Tape' for lo-fi/vaporwave grit, or 'Clean Cassette' for a light mix-tape polish.
Can I export the processed audio?
Offline WAV export is coming soon. For now, you can play the processed audio and capture it with any system-wide audio recorder (e.g. OBS, Audacity).
Is this good for TikTok / Reels edits?
Absolutely β the VHS/tape aesthetic is one of the most popular audio styles on short-form video. Pair it with VHS-style visuals for maximum nostalgia.
Can I use it for podcast intros?
Yes. Record your voice on the 'Record Audio' tab, pick 'Warm Retro' or 'Clean Cassette' and you'll get an instantly recognizable analog-radio feel.
Does it work for music production?
Yes β use it to quickly audition tape vibes on a stem or bounce before committing to a full DAW plugin chain. Great for lo-fi hip-hop, vaporwave, synthwave and bedroom-pop workflows.
Is commercial use allowed?
The tool itself is free to use. Make sure you have the rights to any source material you process and distribute.
